Parking Citation Appeals
The ºÚÁÏÍø parking policies are designed to ensure that university parking facilities are able to serve all university residential and commuter students, employees and guests – and to maintain positive relationships with private property owners living within and near University property.
The university requires Campus Public Safety to enforce the parking policies by patrolling parking areas and streets and issuing citations to those in violation of these policies.
If you received a parking citation but believe that you were parked in compliance with the university parking policies, you may by following the instructions that you received in an email that was sent to you at the time the citation was issued. The link to appeal is also on the citation that you received on your vehicle.
Please read the following instructions carefully before submitting your appeal:
- The appeal will be reviewed by a panel of students and staff not connected with the Campus Public Safety office
- Any questions about appeals should be directed to Jere Witherspoon (Office of Student Life) within seven business days of the citation
- You must provide evidence of your claim. Acceptable evidence is:
- Photo taken at the time of the citation with a timestamp on the photo
- Testimony from a witness
- Any violations not appealed within seven business days will be considered an acknowledgment of the violation and the fees will be charged accordingly. Appeals attempted after the seven-day window will not be accepted
- You must process your appeal through the system noted on your citation
- Campus Public Safety has no ability to hear or grant appeals
- The parking appeal board convenes two or three times a week to consider the appeals
- You will be notified by email of the board's decision
- If the appeal is denied, the fine will be applied to your account during the regular billing cycle
- If your appeal is granted, the fine will be removed from your account or the process will be canceled
- Parking in a fire lane, by a yellow curb, blocking a fire hydrant or parking in a handicapped parking space are not appealable and appeals will not be granted
- If you have an illness or injury and you are using this as part of your appeal, you must provide evidence in the form of a medical professional's notice on official letterhead or documentation
Appeals may be granted for two reasons:
- If there is substantial evidence the appellant did not commit the violation for which the citation was issued. Evidence must be provided in the appeals process.
- The appellant may have committed the violation, but circumstances were not under the appellant’s control. Prior to being issued the citation, the appellant made an attempt to notify Campus Public Safety of the situation. Evidence of these attempts must be provided.
Student Appeals Process
- Follow the instructions you received in the email
- Students are required to submit evidence of their claim (testimony from a witness, a photograph showing your proof)
- A decision will be made within seven business days
- Once the decision has been made, you will be notified via email
- If the appeal is denied, the fine will be placed on your student account during the next billing cycle
